In 1996, the Ministry of Health introduced the Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) system. Under this system, a woman can choose a midwife, a specialist obstetrician or a GP obstetrician to be her LMC. Once nominated, it is the LMC's responsibility to provide the woman with a complete care package. Care may include pre-conceptual advice,
pregnancy tests, regular health checks during pregnancy, ordering and interpreting of diagnostic and screening tests, attendance during labour, delivery assistance and post-partum care for six weeks.
