An obstetrician is a medical doctor who specialises in the care of pregnant women from the time of conception through to childbirth and the immediate postnatal period. Obstetricians have surgical skills, which enable them to perform caesareans when required. They also have special skills that allow them to perform diagnostic and screening tests, often on their own premises. Some obstetricians do further training to become specialists in specific areas, such as high-risk pregnancies or infertility. Most obstetricians are also gynaecologists.
